 The 20th busiest airport ever built, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) lies 20 miles / 32 km southwest of downtown Detroit and close to Romulus and Taylor. Today, passenger figures at Detroit's Metro Airport have never been higher and in just a 12-month period have exceeded 36 million, with continued growth expected.
Detroit Metro offers passengers a good choice of ground transport, linking the Dearborn Rail Station and also the city's historical Cultural Center Historic District, where many museums and art galleries are clustered. In the late 1920s, Wayne County began to plan for their new airport and a suitable site was soon found. By 1930, the Wayne County Airport was opened and had already started to attract airlines. Around 20 years later, the airport was enlarged to become the city's number one airport, with three new runways being built. At this stage it was renamed as the Detroit Wayne Major Airport. Today, known as the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), the airport recently opened its new McNamara Terminal in 2002, which cost more than $1 billion and features 122 gates.
Detroit Metro Airport boasts award-winning services, which are spread around the Berry Terminal, McNamara Terminal and Smith Terminal. These include various ATMs, shoeshine services, vending machines, public telephones and foreign currency exchange desks. Passengers who like to shop will be delighted to find more than 50 shops on hand, including Airport Wireless, CNBC News Detroit, DTW Travel Mart, Duty Free Americas and the Henry Ford Gift Shop. Around 30 different eateries are also to be found at the airport, with favorites such as Chili's, Fox Skybox, Quizno's and Taco Bell.
